Abstract
Since 1923 it is known that manganese is essential for vegetables and microorganisms but there are still many questions to clarify concerning its role in man. A bibliographic study of its functions was made, emphasizing its presence in a form of superoxide dismutase and pointing out the necessities and disturbs that its lack provokes. Finally the manganese contained in foods and the estimated intakes in different countries were also indicated.
