Abstract

This paper presents the results of a novel methodology to measure the progress of digitalization in the Spanish industries and regions. The results show that digital GVA in Spain reached €163.9 billion in 2021, increasing from 9.7% of total GVA in 2011 to 15.0% in 2021. This has been the result of an overall increase in all industries rather than a change in the production model. Growth has been strongest in manufacturing and more moderate in services. In the digital world, capital reap a greater proportion of income than labour in Spain, while in the whole economy this pattern is not observed and the distribution of income between capital and labour has remained stable. The slower progress of digitalization in labour addresses a flaw in our economy as it is not able to incorporate ICT specialists and challenges the inclusion of those workers who that may be displaced by ICTs.
