Abstract

This paper aims to study the importance of irony in Santiago Rusiñol, by analyzing his novel L’auca del senyor Esteve, published in 1907. First we describe the concept of irony that the author had, then we go to check the use of this resource in the aforemantioned novel, through the following sections: the narrator’s irony, situational irony and hypertextual irony or parody. The narrator’s irony – and verbal irony, not studied here – appears to be the most decisive: we can see the game of nattator’s ironic detachment toward the characters, both actions and thoughts and feelings, as well as unlimited use of extranarratives functions (ideological function, communicative function, control function) and reflective digression.
