Resumen
Selenium is an essential element for human life. A selenium deficiency serious enough to threaten an individual's health is uncommon in Western countries like Spain. However, it is of interest to be familiar with the circumstances that create a predisposition for low selenium status, especially in a particular sector of the population: infants. The objective of the present report is to review the literature on selenium as an essential trace element, the nutritional needs, intake, indicators of status and disorders associated with excessive or deficient levels, focusing especially on infants, their needs, recommendations and the content in breast milk and formulas.
