Abstract

This work presents a theoretical review of cyber-plagiarism, as well as the factors that make students fall into this practice. The study proposes several measures aimed at detecting and preventing this phenomenon that both professors and academic institutions should consider to make students aware of the importance of originality in their papers. Moreover, this work highlights the need for information available online to be managed responsibly, allowing students to reach intellectual academic maturity that they can go on to apply at a professional level. Our conclusions are that, even though online information is accessible to everybody, it does not belong to everybody. The use of data and respect for third parties’ intellectual property is still not a reality in higher education.
