Abstract

"Wilde in costume as Salome". This was the title of the photograph in which the writer posed as such, with attributes typical of an end-of-century exotic fantasy: jewels and rhinestones adorned his half-naked body, wrapped in silk and prostrated before the head of John the Baptist. The photograph had appeared in a review by Richard Ellmann, published in Le Monde, and was later included in his 1988 biography of Wilde and his translation into Spanish (1990). Until then no image of the transvestite writer was known. The pose was a departure from the well-known repertoire of portraits of him, but fitted in such a way with his dandy eccentricity that the authenticity of the shot could not be questioned. The truth is that, if during those years the assumption that Wilde posed as Salomé was maintained, since it became clear it was revealed to what extent this female figure conformed to the legend of the writer. In this journey that goes from "doing Salomé" in reverse, to how Salomé "makes" the artists of the late nineteenth century, I am going to guide the following pages, in that misunderstanding in which Wilde's pose is found in a Salomé pose. I intend to investigate how much of the scenery that surrounds this myth has served as authorial figuration and to explore the potential of this self-representation. "Doing Salomé" implies staging a whole performance (theatrical and genre) that is not exhausted in the dimension of her fatal woman. Even more so if it is taken as a mirror in which to look at oneself, in the game of identifications that can be played by whoever writes it, dances or watches it, that is, who stands on it or makes a pose of it.
