Abstract

Sexuality has always been present in Mediterranean imaginary. However, silence continues around certain unmentionable practices. The socio-political complexity of the Maghreb countries contributes to the fact that sexual desires, which contravene what is considered normative, are kept secret and cultural production in general and particularly in cinema encounters many obstacles when it comes to addressing these issues. However, some Tunisian filmmakers have broken their silence and, despite personal difficulties and the limited dissemination of their works, have shown the double standards prevailing in these societies around what are considered marginal sexualities. In this work we briefly review some research journals that have dealt with this topic, such as L’Année du Maghreb (2010) and Africultures (2013), and then focus on a brief analysis of some examples, including the films Bedwin Hacker (2002) by Nadia El Fani, L’Homme de cendres (1986) by Nouri Bouzid, and Le Fil (2010) by Mehdi Ben Attia.
