Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyse whether children and/or their parents’ PCM (perceived motor competence) can predict children’s actual CM (motor competence) according to their sex. 139 children (67 girls) participated in the study (6-11 year-olds). Children’s CM and PCM in manipulative skills were assessed by using the Test of Gross Motor Development and the Pictorial Motor Skill Competence, respectively. An adaptation of the pictorial scale was used to assess parents’ PCM. Children’s PCM in manipulative skills did not predict their actual MC. Parents’ PCM ( = 0.58, p<0.001) explained the 55.2% of the variance of their boys’ MC (with a positive effect of age increasing) but they did not explained girls’ CM. Different results in terms of children’s CM were found according to their sex. Hence, as an alternative to children’s PCM, parents’ PCM does seem to recognize their children’s CM. As a result, parents explain children’s actual MC in manipulative skills moderatel
