Abstract

Philological edition of the Libro de los honestos amores de Peregrino y Ginebra, published in Seville by Jacobo Cromberger around 1510, according to Hernando Diaz's Castilian version of Giacomo Caviceo's Italian original work Il Peregrino (Parma, 1508). The preliminary study focuses on the known editions of the work, and particularly in the editio princeps preserved in the Biblioteca de Palacio (Madrid) under the shelf mark IX/7047(3). In order to prepare the text, all later editions of the work (also published by the Crombergers in 1527, 1544 and 1548) have been examined and collated. On the other hand, this study examines the patronage of Lorenzo Suarez de Figueroa, Third Count of Feria, and Hernando Diaz's little-known biography and literary achievements, while another line of investigation outlines the former holders of the specimen now kept in Palacio. Finally, the argumental and thematic content of the novel and the generic framework are treated in the proper context of the early Sixteenth century and new literary patterns that emerged immediately after the release of La Celestina.
