Abstract

Literature have shown the positive effects of participation in classical sports on children health. However, selection of the sports modality must be performed according to motivations and individual needs related to age and gender. Innovative ideas are necessary to increase their participation, so alternative sport modalities need to emerge. The purpose of the present study was to know if a new racket sport of reduced play space provokes similar physiological and psychological effects to traditional sports [basketball (BASKET) and indoor football (FUTSAL)] in children with and without overweight at primary school. A cross-sectional study was developed with 54 children (10.4±0.1 years old; 44.4% with overweight) who participated in one session of 25 minutes of each sport. Physiological [total physical activity (TPA), mean (MHR) and maximum heart rate (MXHR), activity energy expenditure (AEE)] and psychological [rate of perceive exertion (RPE), affect, enjoyment)] parameters were evaluated.
