Abstract

The scientific literature has pro-vided empirical evidence about the positive effects of the sport and physical activity on the improvement of physical, psychological and social health of people with disabilities. However, the scarce number of stud-ies on this issue show that the sport participation of this social group dur-ing the time at the university is mi-nority and circumstantial (Peralta, 2008; Alejandre de la Torre, 2009; Campos, Llopis, Torregrosa y Badenes, 2016). Even less is known regarding the sports participation of the people with disabilities during the previous three years to the access to university, that is, while they are studying 4th year of Secondary Education and they are between 15 and 18 years old. Awareness of what is going on in this period is absolutely crucial since it is from the age of 14 when, altogether, the number of peo-ple participating in sport and physi-cal activities progressively begins to decrease. Taking into account these shortcomings, the Divina Pastora Chair in Adapted Sport of the Uni-versity of Valencia has carried out a qualitative study with 27 university students with disabilities from four public universities at the Valencian Region. This study has tried to iden-tify –in a retrospective way– the opinions and personal experiences related to sport participation in this period, especially with regard to the subject of Physical Education. The study has researched the main barri-ers and facilitators of sport and phys-ical activity as well as the role of the family and the school regarding sport.
