Resumo

In this study we analyze the growth of R&D spending of Spanish manufacturing firms, through its decomposition into three components that gather the initiation in the performance of R&D activities, the persistence of such activities and their level of deepening. Using data from the Survey on Business Strategies for the period 1990- 2006, the results show that the relative importance of each component differs depending on firm size. Thus, we find that small firms would have experienced higher growth in R&D if they had been able to improve the persistence component. For large companies, the intensification in R&D performance seems to be the most important component to explain the evolution of R&D in the long term
