Resumen

The aim of this paper is to deep study differences in the way managerial jobs are performed in sport organizations, and analyze the importance of public private distinction in these differences. First, empirical evidence about different characteristics between public and private organizations are reviewed. Afterwards, criticism about such distinction are considered, and reasons or dimensions to define public and private organizational categories are discussed. The proposal of a public-private «continuum» is included. Third, validity of dichotomy, continuum and other dimensions to distinguish between public and private organizations to be applied to sport facilities are analyzed. Finally, results of an empirical test in a sample of 73 sport facilities are presented, comparing public and private facilities across two categorizations: dichotomous and multi-categorical (to adapt continuum to a restricted number of groups).
