Abstract
This article the specialisation strategies adopted by the banking institutions of the European Union during the period 1992-1998. Using three specialisation indicators -loans and deposits, cross-border transactions, and service provision- we charactise the European banking systems and treir implications as to costs, efficiency and performance. The banking companies are then grouped into clusters according to balance sheet structures to verify by means of a cost function the existence of differences attributable to the countries in which they operate, even when their specialisation is taken into account.
