Abstract
The model of cognitive demand is a tool to assess the cognitive effort students have to do to solve mathematical problems. We analyse this model, improve it, and adapt it to the geometric patterns problems. We exemplify the application of the model by assessing the cognitive demand several mathematically talented students experienced to solve a geometric pattern problem. Other researchers assess the cognitive demand of problems just analysing their statements, but this paper shows a novel application of the cognitive demand model by analysing also students' answers.
