Abstract
This paper presents some results of a project that aims to identify which spreadsheet characteristics hinder and which ones promote the evolution towards algebraic thinking. Particularly, those results related to the names the students build for the quantities and the ways to refer to them when solving word problems. The group of students observed attended the first year of secondary school, they had not been previously trained to solve problems using the algebraic language and they were taught to solve them in the spreadsheet environment.
