Résumé
Throughout the world, a widely adopted practice in research has been to assess individuals' overall health using a single question. This practice presents several challenges, such as the lack of clarity regarding what individuals consider when responding to such broad inquiries about their general health. Consequently, the information gathered by healthcare professionals regarding the self-perceived health of those they attend or study becomes ambiguous and difficult to compare, both among individuals and across different diseases. This limitation also hinders evidence-based decision making regarding health matters. This study tested a concise version of the most widely used instrument globally for self-assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older Costa Ricans and yielded positive results. These findings provide scientific evidence to support the use of this 8-question instrument in older Costa Ricans. Additionally, similar to recent research in various countries, this study also revealed that the 8-question instrument measures an aspect beyond physical and mental health, challenging the traditional conceptualization of this measurement tool. This article discusses whether this third aspect, particularly in the case of older individuals, is indeed a social component rather than a general health component, as proposed in various studies.
