Abstract

The objective of this research is to approach the problem of drug use in prisons. The aim is to collect data about the presence of drugs in prisons and their forms of use in this context. For this purpose, a semi-structured interview was constructed and applied to a sample of 22 people who have spent time in prisons in the Valencian Community (Spain). After applying content analysis with inter-judge evaluation, the results reveal the existence of dysfunctionalities in terms of prevention and control of drug consumption in prisons, reflected in the high availability of drugs in prison, the stressful environment and the lack of effective intervention by prison workers, all of which suggests that prison is a context with a high availability for consumption.
