Abstract

The article analyzes Nietzsche’s late physiology of art within the project of transforming humanity that characterizes throughout his intellectual career. Nietzsche thinks of artistic expression as a symptom of profoundly physiological phenomena, which inform us of the artists’ and their audience’s condition. Nietzsche’s diagnosis of Wagner’s art involves not only Wagner himself but, above all, his public, modern culture, and society, manifesting as a symptom of their décadence and ascetic power. The last section explores Nietzsche’s understanding of aesthetics as applied physiology, their adaptive and collective components and their instrumental use by politics.
