Abstract

The linguistic and historiographical analysis of Valencian documentation from the 13th to the 15th century makes it possible to verify that Valencian was formed from the basically Catalan-Aragonese repopulation of the time, in which there was a predominance of Western Catalans. The Eastern Catalans adapted to Western Catalan, and the Aragonese, by adopting Catalan, contributed to strengthening its western features. Linguistic leveling did not result in a hybrid language, but in a relatively uniform modality in almost the entire Valencian geographical area. Only a sociolinguistic theory of repopulation can satisfactorily explain the genesis of Valencian and its typological affiliation to Western Catalan.
