Abstract
The present study analyses some significant images of the Israeli judge Gideon inserted into the emblematic tradition and puts them in relation to their literary sources and the visual discourses derived from them. It emphasizes the representation of the fleece as an image of the purity and fullness of the grace granted by Yahweh, where the Fathers of the Church soon saw a prefiguration of the virginity of Mary Immaculate, or the image of the burning torch next to the broken jug, allusion to the courage and effort of Gideon to defeat the Midianites. It also inquires about the uses of such images in relation to power and devotions, highlighting the role of Gideon as an example of faith, effective government, and moral righteousness.
