Abstract

The existence of slums is a widespread phenomenon in cities around the world, including those in the Nordic countries with the strong Welfare States. The particular case of Denmark with its antiquity politics is presented on the international scene as an incipiently questioned experience among citizens, academia, and professionals. The purpose of this communication is to analyze the Danish policy of intervention in vulnerable areas from a professional perspective. For this, an exhaustive search has been carried out in secondary data sources, participant observation, and interviews with different professionals with high knowledge of the so-called “Ghetto Package”. Among the main results, it is worth mentioning the establishment of a set of intervention measures from the national government to be implemented in the respective severe ghettos by the local governments. Most of the interviews show dissatisfaction with the demolition measures and relocation of residents to other homes, as well as the absence of citizen participation in the implementation process. However, to understand this policy, it is necessary to consider the assimilationist institutional model of the Danish government. The naturalization of the Danish anti-immigration policy is closely related to the measures contemplated in the anti-immigration policy, such as greater penalties for the commission of crimes in these spaces, criminalization of re-education trips to the countries of origin, and compulsory nurseries for the learning of Danish securities, among others. In conclusion, and despite the current state of implementation of the policy under study, it should be noted the existence of many lights and shadows both in its approach, methodology, conception, and in the results obtained so far.
