Abstract

Planning in Interdisciplinary Dentistry is a key factor that should define, not only, a common treatment objective for the orthodontist and the restorative dentist, but also for the acceptance of the treatment by the patient. This premise will take on special relevance in those situations that involve changing the shape and size of the teeth. In this article, we present the innovative use of a classic diagnostic tool, such as the “mock-up” and which has traditionally only been used in Restorative Dentistry. With the new approach proposed, the “mock-up” will be the communication link in interdisciplinary treatment, being placed prior to the start of orthodontic treatment, or in an intermediate phase within it. Thus, the “intra-orthodontic mock-up” will predictably guide the orthodontist in achieving an ideal dental position, which previously will have been agreed with the restorative dentist, both from a functional and aesthetic point of view. On the other hand, it will allow the patient enough time to get used to the new shape and size of the teeth before the placement of the definitive restorations. Finally, after the completion of the orthodontic therapy and the immediate removal of the “intra-orthodontic mock up”, sufficient space will have been obtained to place the definitive restorations, without the need for dental preparation or at least the less invasive possible.
