Abstract

Presidential interruption processes in Latin America have punished the president's party, favouring the alternation of power and the rise of opposition forces. However, Paraguay is an exception: the fall of Raúl Cubas did not electorally punish the ANR, which has remained in power uninterruptedly since the advent of democracy, with a single period of alternation: the presidency of Fernando Lugo. However, the institutional crisis linked to the fall of Cubas also contributed to resolving internal crises within the party, largely due to the existence of conflicting factions. Analysing the Paraguayan case sheds light on the resilience of governing parties in contexts of crisis
