Abstract

Thescientificliteratureincludes manystudiesthat highlight theimpact of child maltreatment, including child sexual abuse (CSA), on mental health. However, studies that explore and relate these variables in samples of adolescents in judicial measures are still scarce. Therefore, the aim of this research was to analyze the prevalence of child maltreatment in the life history of these adolescents, gender differences in different types of maltreatment, and the relationship between child maltreatment, emotion regulation, and self-esteem. The adaptation of the Child Abuse and Trauma scale (CAT), the sexual abuse subscale of the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire (JVQ), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale (RSE) were administered to 30 adolescents (22 males and 8 females) aged 15 to 17 years (M=16.33, SD=0.76) from a social-educational residence in Castellón (Spain). In the case of the CAT, statistically significant gender differences were only found in the item of past traumatic sexual experiences (U=49,p=.009). Women reported more such experiences. However, no such differences were found on the JVQ. Twenty percent of adolescents reported having been victims of CSA, 13.6% of males and 37.5% of females. Regarding the relationship between the variables, a statistically significant association with a negative sign was found between emotion regulation and self-esteem (r=-.599, p=.009). In-depth knowledge of the relationship between childhood experiences of abuse and the development of mental health problems in adolescents who have committed acrimecould be useful for developing strategiesaimed not onlyat reducing recidivism, butalso at improving the mental health of this group.
