Abstract

People use changing rooms in different sports spaces and contexts. In general, these spaces are highly gendered and are designed to be used separately by cissexual men and women. Due to its strong gendered character, changing rooms generate discomfort and conflict in those people whose gender identity does not correspond to their sex assigned at birth. In fact, various studies have considered changing rooms as one of the most problematic spaces for trans people. Specifically, changing rooms that do not have mechanisms that ensure the privacy of the bodies, require their public exposure, control, and surveillance. The social reactions that such body exposure arouses in the people who occupy these spaces are key to understanding how these spaces especially affect the self-esteem and self-concept of trans people, as well as their relationship with sport and physical activity. To learn about the experiences and situations that take place in sports locker rooms, in this study we analyzed 43 semi-directed interviews conducted with transgender people. The results show that these spaces are relevant for the construction of the gender identity of trans people and that the discomfort they feel in them affects their degree of commitment and enjoyment with physical-sports practices. Sports institutions and social workers should take these experiences into consideration if they want to promote sport and physical activity among transgender people. The changing rooms thus become spaces for social intervention to improve the access and enjoyment of trans people in these sports spaces.
