Abstract

We analyse qualitatively the implementation of a teaching and learning model designed to work on the quadratic function with tablets through the mathematical modelling of a real-life phenomenon in a group of 11th grade students. The phenomenon studied is the relation between the time and the height of a ball when it is dropped from a certain height considering only the first jump. The analysis of the data reveals that a previous study of the qualitative properties of this phenomenon and the students' previous knowledge are key elements when they have to choose the function used as a model and they interpret the results in terms of the phenomenon. We also observe that the students have a rooted idea about the concept of height.
