Abstract

The educational space determines the physical context, but also the social one, where the learningprocess takes place. For this reason, the construction of the new CEIP Fernando de los Ríos in theMalilla neighborhood (València), with more than 40 years of history, was an opportunity to rethink thespaces of the educational center and the current (known) and future uses of the school (desired). Forthis purpose, an open and consensual participatory process based on the methodology of ParticipatoryAction Research (PAR) was designed expressly and developed during the 2021-2022 academic year. The objective is to involve in the reflection and definition of space proposals both the educational community,as the main user of the newly built Malilla CEIP, as well as the group of social agents identifiedin the neighborhood who may be potential users outside of school hours. For this, different researchtechniques were applied in four sequential phases adapted to each group, which has resulted in abroad consensus in the identification of needs and proposals for improvement. With this, the participatoryprocess guarantees the effectiveness and viability of the project by favoring its acceptance andintegration as a key to identity in the educational and neighborhood social fabric
