Abstract

The main aim of this work is to analyse empirically and theoretically the phenomenon of 'glass ceiling' in the career paths of women managers. The reflections we show are the result of a cross-national cooperation among the Universities of Westminster, Lincolnshire-Humberside and Liverpool in the UK, and the University of Valencia in Spain. Both countries have developed two NOW -New Opportunities for Women- projects that share the aim to promote the access of women to management positions through different actions. Our main conclusion is that organisational culture, gender stereotypes, and family responsibilities assumed by the majority of women as a 'duty' are the main obstacles in their careers. From these results, different proposals are suggested in order to promote the participation of women in management positions
