Resum

Halitosis may be defined as the exhalation of unpleasant breath. Oral halitosis refers to halitosis of an oral origin. In the present time, society is very demanding with one's image, not only in aesthetic terms, but with body odours as well. Bad breath may ruin social and working communication and may produce psychological trauma in the patient, which may eventually lead to social seclusion or even avoidance of family and marriage relationships. On the other hand, both the dentist and the oral hygienist are the professionals to whom the patients ask for help in these cases, and frequently these professionals do not have enough knowledge to deal with the problem and give their patients the best advice. This article makes a revision on the aetiology, pathogeny, and treatment of oral halitosis, stressing its special relation with periodontal diseases
