Abstract

In this paper, the probability distribution of a continuous random variable is characterized through the elasticityfunction, a concept that can be extended from the economic field to the Statistic. Its use is illustrated with severalexamples: for known random variables its elasticity function is obtained; and known this, the corresponding randomvariable is determined. The utility of its use is discussed at the point where it takes the value 1, which responds tothe change in elasticity from elastic to inelastic, or vice versa.
