Abstract
Several important laws passed during year 2007 by the Spanish Parliament explicitly mention geological heritage and geodiversity. This is the first time in the history of Spain that these aspects are considered in a legal norm, not just the traditional ambiguous reference to the aesthetics of external morphologies and landscapes, but in direct reference to the intrinsic and extrinsic values of geological heritage. These are Law 5/2007 (National Parks Network), Law 42/2007 (Natural Heritage and Biodiversity), and Law 45/2007 (Sustainable Development of Rural Environment). The Commission on Geological Heritage of the Geological Society of Spain participated in the elaboration of amendments to the preliminary drafts and bills of these new Spanish laws by directly informing Parliament representatives. Recognition of the Geological Society, and in particular of its Commission, as valid speaker and adviser for national and regional government administrations regarding these issues would facilitate a better future implementation of these new laws and their compliance with international legislation.
