Abstract
The anecdote, transmitted by Athenaeus (1.20 E-F), of the so lauded musical qualities of Sophocles has still some controversies about how and in which circumstances these performances happened. In this paper, the author examines the different sources that transmit this anecdote, in order to analyse what kind of performance Sophocles realized and in order to understand the reason why he stopped acting
