Abstract
Confined lagoons have short periods of connection with the sea and their limnological characteristics are mainly related to freshwater discharges, either from surface run-off or groundwater. La Pletera salt marshes (Girona) is a confined Mediterra- nean coastal ecosystem under the Life+ project aimed at restoring this protected area. A previous study (Casamitjana et al., 2019) used the “General Lake Model” (GLM) to estimate water inflows, outflows and evaporation fluxes on three existing lagoons (two natural and one newly constructed in 2002), in order to establish the water balance and determine the effects of hydrology and hydrogeology on the functioning of the aquifer-lagoon system. In this study, we analyze three newly created lagoons, in 2016, and use the same model to compare these lagoons with the previously studied. We analyze and compare the hydrogeological pattern of these lagoons and the effect the restoration efforts had on each lagoon. Specifically, we determine their dependence on groundwater resources, to find out if water circulation is mainly determined by sudden surface inputs, or is mainly driven by groundwater circulation. Knowledge of these hydrological dynamics will help in developing sustainable management guidelines for these specific type of ecosystems.
