Abstract

Objective. The aim is to find out how dentists were affected by COVID-19, the protection measures adopted, their self-perception and their employment situation during the first wave of the pandemic in Spain. Method. A cross-sectional survey is designed applied online through the social network WhatsApp. The LimeSurvey application was used for the structured and validated questionnaire. It is based on an International Collaborative study protocol registered in the World Pandemic Research Network-486352. Results. A sample of 2,318 dentists of both sexes was obtained, average age of 44.9 years. All the autonomous communities reached; 52.8% are dental clinic owners and 4.2% work exclusively in the public system. The rate of those infected is 3%. The 59.7% closed or limited their activity to telephone consultation and did so mainly due to the lack of personal protective equipment (51%). Those who kept their activity limited to face-to-face emergencies (39.5%), the majority adopted the recommended protective measures against infection. The 20.6% prescribed more antibiotics during that period. A 33.4% of dentists declared being not sure what is considered an emergency in dentistry. Conclusions. The infection rate among dentists is low. The criterion of urgency was not clear for a significant minority. Dentists adopt high protection measures and feel confident in avoiding being infected in their work.
