Abstract

We get closer to the iconography of the Virgen de la Leche in XVIth century Valencian painting, especially in the Macips workshop and, in particular, by Joan de Joanes, one of the most representatives painters of the Spanish Renaissance. We also analyze their fortune in previous art and how these greatly enrich their representation and come to standardize it through multiple variants for private use. Finally, and in this salvific context, we address one of Joanes's masterpieces, the "Virgen del venerable Agnesio", recently analyzed as a cover-up painting in relation to the evangelization and conversion of the Valencian Mudejars.
