The purpose of this essay is to provide a critical survey of the ways in which a young generation of American playwrights, most of them women, are redefining American theatre from the regional, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway scene. My objective is to identify, analyse and understand some of the defining features of twenty-first-century theatrical poetics in the United States of America.
