Abstract

Fructuosus, bishop of Tarragona, together with two deacons were condemned to death by burning in the amphitheater by the Roman governor. This type of execution was frequently used against Christian martyrs; however this paper will show that it was not as common for important members of the Church, such as bishops, who were normally punished by less violent penalties. Fructuosus’ case represents, along with two others bishops, an exception that should be considered
