Resumen

The effectiveness of the dental sealants in the reduction of caries on fissured surfaces has been extensively demostrated in the literature. The aim of the present study was to analyze retention percentage of fissure sealants in permanent first molars and the caries preventive effect of these sealants three years after aplication. Seventy children were selected (35 test and 35 control) with dft ≥ 2 and/or DMFI ≠ 0. The sealant used was Helioseal®. The teeth were examinated in intervals of six months. The percentages of sealant total retention obtained were 92%, 81.5% and 70.4% after 12, 24 and 36 months, respectively. The partial sealed were 6.4%, 7.05% and 14.3% in the same intervals of time. DMFT (M1) scores obtained after three years were 0.57 (SD= 0.98) for the test group and 1.20 (SD꓿1.32) for the control group. This sealant is effectiving pit and fisure caries.
