Resumo

Abstract This doctoral thesis presents, as the general objective of the research, gain insight in the attitudes and behaviour of directors/managers of establishments focused on tourism in the Murcia Region, in regard to Accessible Social Tourism. The following specific objectives proposed are as follows: to establish an appropriate theoretical framework to address the study of Social Tourism, Accessible Tourism, and Social Accessible Tourism, from its evolving concept to the conceptual framework it is today, its regulatory framework and defining parameters; to define a methodology that allows us to research Accessible Social Tourism, understanding and development of this concept in tourism focussed establishments in the Murcia Region; to obtain scientifically verifiable results which provide us with insights into the attitudes and behaviour of the directors / managers of tourist facilities of the Murcia Region; draw conclusions and create proposals for future research that will advance the study and development of tourism accessibility policies. The target population of our research consists of the hotel- and apartments-directors in the Murcia Region, to ascertain their attitudes and behaviour towards Accessible Social Tourism, this information has been obtained through a survey, conducted as a research technique, and the results and interpretation have been attained through the corresponding statistical analysis. The thesis on the conceptual study of Social Tourism and Accessible Tourism, in order to define the so-called Accessible Social Tourism in the Murcia Region, can therefore convey the findings and their interpretation. Current demographic circumstances (the increase in causes for disability or population aging) have led to an increased number of people with differed functionalities. Therefore, we consider this collective is in need of more protective public policies which promote inclusion and integration, which is often lacking. These two population groups (disabled people and people over 65 years of age), establish potential segments generating specific demand(s) for tourist activities. Which explains the importance of improving tourism and leisure spaces and assuring their accessibility, in response to the rising demand by people who have disabilities or differed functionality. Creating a tourism best describes as a "tourism for all". The first step would be adapting the access to tourism and entertainment activities for anyone, regardless of their abilities by removing barriers (not only architectural ones). The second step would be to provide complete information on tourist and leisure activities to these groups, as to not cause confusion and consequently disappointment. The necessity of specific and detailed preparation of those responsible for the offer of tourism and leisure activities, in order for them to understand the needs of certain groups, and tailor the services to the needs of each collective, whether they are older, or have disabilities. In conclusion this thesis supports the concept of inclusive tourism to facilitate universal access for all in the development of tourism and leisure activities.
