Abstract
Objective: to show the importance of the study, diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders in psychoactive substance abusers. Material and methods: description of personality disorders by the cluster B of the DSM-IV, wich includes the antisocial, the borderline, the histrionic and the narcisist personality disorders. The addictive behavior has been also esteemed. Results: the personality disorders'' prevalence in psychoactive substance abusers exceed general population''s one and the existence of more than one disorder is frequent. Genetic and psychosocial factors have been related to both disorders. Conclusions: faced with the multiple proposals that relate personality disorders to psychoactive substance abuse and the past approach insufficiency, is necessary to change to a clinic intervention that combine the psychotherapeutical and psychofarmacological treatment of both disorders.
