La diversidad cultural y el diálogo internacional para un mundo en PAZLa aportación del PICG

Abstract

UNESCO promotes several values aiming at the understanding among different cultures, respect, international cooperation... These values attempt a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable World. The International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) contributes to reach the main UNESCO pursuits. In this sense, the IGCP is an international and multidisciplinary program of scientific cooperation between developed and emerging countries and between generations with the goal of contributing to a more stable and friendly Planet. IGCP also aspires to promote the use of geological knowledge in global issues, such us e.g. sustainable development, the health and safety of humanity and the reduction of “unfriendly” effects caused by natural disasters and resources exploitation. The holistic comprehension of the Earth Geology and the inputs geologist can provide to the human wellbeing are favoured by the implementation of IGCPs. By definition, these projects are international and the activities that take place in them (e.g., fieldwork, workshops, capacity-building and training courses, conferences) require participants to be continuously exposed to different cultures and diverse ways of seeing and understanding the world. The bonds forged through numerous common activities enable a better comprehension of cultural diversity and facilitate the dialogue among nations. In addition to these activities, they bridge the methodological and technological gaps between developing and developed countries. In brief, IGCP helps to built a better, more harmonious, tolerant and safe world, which in turn will pave the way towards a World in PEACE.
