Abstract
This article appraises the main factors of competitiveness of the Spanish savings banks. Specifically, this work analyses the trends and volatility of the performance of savings and private banks as well as their contribution of the different financial institutions to the rest of the economy. The study, undertakent both at national and international level, shows that savings banks' performance tends to be higher and more stable than that of private banks during the period 1991-96. In this context, we find that Spanish savings banks enjoy certain competitive advantages compared with the Spanish private banks and the savings banks of other OECD countries.
