We present part of a research project aimed to analyze the progress of primary school students’algebraic thinking when solving a sequence of geometric pattern problems. To accomplish this, it isnecessary to analyze the diversity of strategies used by students when solving these problems. Afterhaving analyzed the strategies found in the literature, we present a new classification as atheoretical framework for our research. The aim of this new framework is to allow a more detailedand deeper analysis of students’ responses. In this classification we distinguish between strategiesused on direct and inverse question. We describe each strategy and show examples of answers byprimary school students.
