Abstract

Plesiosaur remains are relatively scarce in the European Barremian record and fossils from the Arcillas de Morella Formation constitutes the largest sample for the Iberian record. New plesiosaur material from this unit is identified herein as Plesiosauria indet. These remains come from the Mas Macià Querol site (Morella, Castellón, Spain). They have been found in upper Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) materials. The presence of triangular articular facets located dorsally near the limit of the neural arch, which do not occupy much of the center, the existence of a pair of subcentral nutritional foramina located very close to each other, and the absence of facets for the chevrons allow us to identify the vertebral center as anterior caudal ones. This new finding extends to seven sites with fossils of plesiosaurs in the Arcillas de Morella Formation and highlights the importance of it for the study of these animals in the Lower Cretaceous of the Iberian Peninsula.
