Abstract

This article aims to analyse a miniature of Saint Euphrosyne found in the manuscript Ambros. G 63 sup. Probably, it is one of the most ancient iconographic depiction of this saint. The artist plays with the ambiguity of the saint. In her vita she disguised herself as a man to enter in a monastery of monks under the name of Smaragdos. The saint is depicted in a double portrait on both faces of the folio, as a man on one side, and as a woman on the other.
