Abstract

In this study, gum rosin was used in in both, electrospinning and electrospraying processes. Moreover, the ability of gum rosin microparticles to act as nanoparticles carrier in a electrohydrodynamic process was analysed. For this purpose, two gum rosin solutions were prepared, one with 45 wt % of gum rosin and the other one with 60 wt.% of gum rosin, for electrospraying and electrospinning respectively. Silver nanoparticles and halloysite nanotubes were added by the blending method in 3 wt. % of the solutions. Then, the solutions were subject to an electrohydrodynamic process. The obtained particles were analysed by scanning electronic microscopy. It was determined that the width size distribution of the microfibers is narrow while the diameter size distribution of the microspheres was wide. Moreover, it was possible to observe that the microspheres satisfactorily encapsulate the employed nanoparticles. Additionally, it was seen that the change in morphology to microstructures significatively increase the water contact angle of raw gum rosin. Finally, antibacterial test was performed. However, due to gum rosin hydrophobicity, no inhibition effect was observed, except when the loaded particle was silver nanoparticles. This imply that gum rosin could act as carrier for active particles.
