Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse the anxious and depressive symptomatology, stress and life satisfaction of adolescents from Spain and Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic. Likewise, the aim was to carry out a cross-cultural study looking for possible differences and similarities in the adaptation of adolescents from these two countries of the same language and highly affected by COVID-19. A total of 257 adolescents (69.90% girls) aged between 12 and 16 years (M= 14.93; SD= 0.92) participated. Of the adolescents, 67.30% were from Spain (n=174), and 32.70% from Mexico (n=83). After obtaining informed consent from peers, mothers or legal guardians, anxious and depressive symptoms, stress (DASS-21; Fonseca-Pedrero, Paino, et al.,2010) and life satisfaction (SWLS; Diener et al., 1985) were assessed. Descriptive analyses, t-tests for independent samples and calculation of Cohen's d for effect size, Chi-square analyses and Pearson correlations were conducted. Our data showed that adolescents from Spain and Mexico showed low emotional distress and moderate life satisfaction. However, adolescents in Mexico showed greater emotional distress than those in Spain. These results emphasise the need to detect the specific needs of adolescents, taking into account their socio-economic and cultural context, in order to implement interventions aimed at protecting their mental health during this pandemic.
