Resumo

The practice of running has increased in recent years throughout Europe, what some have called its “second wave”. Spain has not been left out of this trend, which is clearly visible in some of its major cities such as Valencia. In this city, the proportion of people aged 15 and over who practice running has increased from 4.9% in 2005 to 11% in 2019 and the number of people participating in the Circuito de Carreras Populares (an event made up of ten races of between 5 and 6.5 km that are held throughout the year) has increased from 6,668 in 2005 to 59,002 in 2019. Taking into account these figures, which are clearly illustrative of the evolution of running in this city, this paper offers an interpretation of the factors that have led to this expansion. The analysis is based on several secondary sources and especially on a qualitative study in which runners and people professionally involved in the sport in the city were interviewed
