Abstract

The perceived support in the organization has been linked with the employee organizational citizenship behavior. However, there is little evidence of the differences between the sources of support between and within individuals and intra and extrarole. We analyze the links from perceived support from colleagues, customers and supervisor to both intra-role and extra-role organizational citizenship behavior, at daily level and at individual level. We conducted a diary study with 32 employees, filling in a daily questionnaire during 10 working days. With data nested at individual level, the results of regression analysis showed that, at within-individual level, when employees perceive more support from the colleagues, they report higher levels of intra-role and extra-role. At between-individual level, support from customers has a positive impact on intra-role OCB, while support from supervisor has a negative impact on intrarole OCB. This within and between-person study contributes to the research both on sources of support in the organization and on differences in intrarole and extrarole organizational citizenship behavior. Our findings have important implications both for employees and for organizations.
